Hummingbird Tongue Facts: How They Actually Drink
👅 Hummingbird Tongue Facts: How They Actually Drink
For decades, scientists thought hummingbirds drank through their tongues like a soda straw.
High-speed cameras proved us wrong. The truth is much weirder.
1. It’s a Fork 🍴
The tip of their tongue is split in two. It looks like a snake’s tongue.
2. It’s a Mop 🧹
The tongue is covered in tiny fringes called lamellae. When the tongue hits the nectar, the fork spreads open, and the fringes soak up the liquid like a paper towel.
3. The “Micropump” ⛽
When they pull the tongue back in, they squeeze the nectar out and swallow. They do this 15 to 20 times per second.
4. It Wraps Around Their Brain 🧠
Their tongue is so long (to reach deep flowers) that it doesn’t fit in their beak. When retracted, it coils around the back of their skull, over their eyes!
📸 See It Up Close
To see the tongue in action, you need a feeder that lets you get close, or a good camera.
- Smart Bird Feeder with Camera: These capture high-speed video. You can slow it down and actually watch the tongue flickering in and out of the nectar.
- Macro Lens for iPhone: Clip this onto your phone and sit by the feeder for incredible close-up shots.
Nature is amazing.
