How to Keep Bees Away from Hummingbird Feeders (Advanced Tips)
🐝 How to Keep Bees Away from Hummingbird Feeders
Hummingbirds and bees both love sugar. But they don’t like to share. A swarm of yellow jackets will chase birds away.
You don’t want to kill the bees (we need pollinators!), but you need them off the feeder.
1. The “Nectar Guard” Tips
If you use a bottle feeder, buy Nectar Guard Tips. These are small rubber valves that slip over the port.
- How it works: The bird’s long beak pushes the valve open. The bee’s short tongue cannot.
2. Switch to a “Dish” Feeder
This is the ultimate fix.
- The Tool: Aspects HummZinger.
- Why: The nectar sits below the ports. The bird’s long tongue can reach it. The bee’s tongue is too short. It physically cannot reach the liquid. Problem solved.
3. The Distraction Feeder
If the swarm is huge, give them their own bowl.
- The Trick: Place a saucer of extra-sweet sugar water (1:1 ratio) in a far corner of the yard.
- The Result: Bees prefer the high-sugar easy meal and will leave the 4:1 feeder alone.
4. Check for Leaks
Bees hunt by smell. If your feeder is dripping, it smells like a candy factory. Clean it and tighten the base.
Peace restored.
