🐿️ How to Deal with Squirrels on Hummingbird Feeders

Squirrels usually prefer seeds. But in a drought or high heat, they get thirsty. A hummingbird feeder is a giant juice box.

They will tip it over, chew through the plastic, and drain it dry.

1. The Baffle (The Cone of Shame)

The most effective tool is a physical barrier.

  • The Tool: A Squirrel Baffle (a large plastic cone) on the pole.
  • Placement: The baffle must be at least 4 feet off the ground. Squirrels can jump high.

2. The “Hot” Nectar? (Myth)

Some people add cayenne pepper. DO NOT DO THIS.

  • Why: While birds can’t taste spice, cayenne can irritate their eyes. It is not worth the risk.

3. Location, Location

Squirrels can jump 10 feet horizontally.

  • The Fix: Place your feeder pole at least 10 feet away from trees, decks, or roofs.

4. Metal Feeders

If they are chewing the plastic, switch to glass and metal.

Outsmart the rodent!
