📅 How to Attract Hummingbirds Year-Round

Many people think hummingbird season is just June, July, and August. They are missing out on half the fun!

Depending on where you live (especially the West Coast or South), you can have hummingbirds 12 months a year. Even in the North, the season runs from April to October.

Here is your roadmap to keeping them happy in every season.

🌷 Spring: The “Welcome Back” Party

Goal: Attract the hungry migrants returning from Mexico.

  • The Problem: Few flowers are blooming yet.
  • The Strategy: Put feeders out 2 weeks before the average arrival date. (Check migration maps online).
  • Best Plants: Columbine, Azaleas, Bleeding Hearts.
  • Pro Tip: Tie Red Ribbons on bushes. The scouts are looking for red, and they will investigate the ribbons and find your feeder.

☀️ Summer: The “Main Event”

Goal: Support nesting moms and growing babies.

  • The Problem: Competition. Every neighbor has a feeder out now.
  • The Strategy: Freshness wins. Change nectar every 2 days in the heat. Clean feeders attract more birds.
  • Best Plants: Salvia, Bee Balm, Zinnia, Trumpet Vine.
  • Tool: Add a Solar Mister. Birds need to cool off!

🍂 Fall: The “Fuel Up”

Goal: Help them fatten up for the long flight south.

  • The Problem: Summer flowers are dying.
  • The Strategy: Leave feeders up! It is a myth that feeders keep birds from migrating. They migrate based on sunlight, not food. They need your feeder to build fat reserves.
  • Best Plants: Late-blooming Salvia, Pineapple Sage, Cardinal Flower.
  • Tool: Switch to a high-capacity feeder like the First Nature 32oz if you see swarms (called a “charm”) of birds fighting.

❄️ Winter: The “Survival Mode”

Goal: Help the residents (Anna’s Hummingbirds) or stragglers survive the frost.

  • The Problem: Nectar freezes.
  • The Strategy:
    1. Bring it in: Bring feeders inside at night.
    2. Heat it: Use a feeder heater or tape a hand warmer to the bottom.
    3. Ratio: Some experts say switch to a 3:1 sugar ratio in freezing temps for extra energy (and lower freezing point).
  • Tool: The Kingsyard Feeder Dome helps block snow and keeps the feeder slightly warmer.
  • Indoor Bloom: Place Red Ceramic Planters with blooming flowers near a window to signal that you are still “open for business.”

🔄 The Cycle of Life

By adjusting your strategy every few months, you become a reliable partner in their survival, not just a summer tourist.

Happy Year-Round Birding!
