How Long Do Hummingbirds Live? (Lifespan & Aging)
⏳ How Long Do Hummingbirds Live?
On average, hummingbirds live for 3 to 5 years in the wild. While their high metabolism and heart rate (up to 1,200 bpm) suggest a short life, some individuals survive much longer. The record for the oldest known hummingbird is a Broad-tailed hummingbird that lived to be 12 years old, while Ruby-throated hummingbirds have been recorded living up to 9 years.
In their first year of life, hummingbirds face the highest mortality rates due to migration exhaustion, predators, and lack of experience. However, once they survive their first winter, their chances of living a full 5-year lifespan increase significantly.
🏆 The Record Breakers
If they survive that first year, they can live a long time.
- The Record: The oldest known Broad-tailed Hummingbird was 12 years old.
- The Ruby-Throat: The record is 9 years.
💀 The Dangers
What kills them?
- Weather: A sudden freeze or a hurricane during migration.
- Predators: Cats, hawks, and even Praying Mantises.
- Windows: Collisions with glass are a major cause of death.
🛡️ Protecting Your Flock
You can’t stop the weather, but you can stop window collisions.
- Anti-Collision Window Decals: These stickers reflect UV light. Birds see a glowing stop sign; humans just see a clear sticker. They save millions of birds a year.
- Predator Guards: A baffle on your feeder pole keeps cats and snakes from climbing up.
👵 How to Spot an “Old” Bird
It is very hard to tell age by looking. However, older males often have richer, deeper colors in their gorget (throat), and they are usually the dominant “bully” at the feeder because they have survived enough battles to claim the best turf.
Respect your elders!
