DIY Hummingbird Nesting Material Holder (Easy Project)
🧶 DIY Hummingbird Nesting Material Holder
One of the coolest things you can see is a female hummingbird gathering fluff to build her tiny, walnut-sized nest.
You can help her (and encourage her to nest in your yard) by providing premium building supplies.
🛠️ The Project
Time: 5 Minutes Cost: Free (mostly)
Materials:
- A wire whisk (from the dollar store) OR a mesh onion bag.
- Material: Raw Cotton (organic), Sheep’s Wool, or “Hummingbird Helper” fluff.
- AVOID: Dryer lint (chemicals), Human hair (can wrap around toes), Synthetic yarn.
Steps:
- Stuff It: Pull the wires of the whisk apart slightly and stuff the cotton/wool inside. It should be loose enough that a bird can pull a tuft out easily.
- Hang It: Tie a string to the handle of the whisk.
- Place It: Hang it near your feeder, but under a branch so it stays dry.
🛒 Don’t Want to DIY?
If you don’t have the materials, you can buy a pre-filled holder.
- Hummingbird Helper Nesting Station: Comes with a wire frame and safe, sterile cotton/wool blend.
- Refill Wool: Already have a suet cage? Just stuff this wool inside.
🎥 Watch the Magic
In the spring, you will see females hovering at the whisk, pulling out tufts of wool. Follow her flight path… she will lead you right to her nest!
Happy Building!
