🍬 Can You Overfeed Hummingbirds?

In a world where we worry about human obesity and sugar intake, it’s natural to wonder: Am I giving my birds diabetes?

The short answer is NO.

Here is why hummingbirds are biologically designed to be sugar addicts.

🏎️ The Metabolism Machine

Hummingbirds burn energy faster than any other animal. They are like a jet fighter that needs refueling every 15 minutes.

  • The Math: They consume their body weight in nectar daily. If a human did that, we would gain 300 lbs a day.
  • The Burn: They burn it off instantly. They cannot “get fat” because excess weight would make flight impossible.

🚫 The Only Risk: “Empty Calories”

The only danger is if they eat only sugar.

  • Protein: They need insects for protein (muscle building).
  • The Fix: Don’t use pesticides. If your yard has bugs, the birds will balance their own diet. They know when they need a gnat versus a sip of syrup.

🦷 Do They Get Cavities?

No. Their beaks are keratin (like fingernails), not bone with teeth. They don’t have teeth to rot.

Feed them without guilt!
